8 - God, our Fortress
1:
God, our Fortress and Refuge eternal, is a Bulwark, strong and unfailing.
He defends us with love that’s paternal; over evil, He is prevailing.
We suffer pain and woe, embattled by the foe,
But God protects His own. All, by Him, is foreknown.
Firm in Him, we shall be victorious.
2:
If we were in our own strength confiding, we would often fail and be losing,
Were it not for the One who’s abiding close to us, the One of God’s choosing.
To earth, God sent His Son, Christ Jesus, holy One,
From age to age the same. We will fight in His name;
He must win the battle before us.
3:
In this world, many evils assail us; storms arise to harm and undo us.
We’ll not fear, for God’s hand will avail us;
He will make His truth triumph through us.
The prince of darkness grim, we tremble not for him.
His rage we can endure, for his doom will be sure.
At God’s word, he will be defeated.
